It took me a while to buy in to the whole Twitter thing. I didn’t really see the point of it. 140 characters to tell a mostly faceless audience about how you ‘just bought a #hamburger’ or how you are ‘sitting on the #toilet thinking about how funny #howIMetYourMother was last night’.
How was this stupid platform in anyway benefiting the progression of mankind?
But one day it dawned on me that there were some pretty switched on people on this thing. And they were all constantly sharing little tidbits of really cool information. So, I jumped on board and became one of the 27% of Twitter users who just watch but don’t participate in the conversation.
Gradually, I began to send out a tweet or two until eventually I found I’d become a frequent Twitterer or Twerp or Tweeter (in fact, what is the plural of Twitter users?). Anyways, I digress…
I found that the most beneficial aspect of Twitter was listening in and eventually interacting with people who, prior to Twitter existing, were difficult to find let alone converse with. (Side note: I once got a personal response from Barack Obama’s Chief Digital Strategist, Joe Rospars – that was pretty damm cool!) So I scoured both my own and MYOB’s Twitter followers list and came up with a list of awesome people who often share amazing insights, help and commentary into some really great things that you may not be following yet.
So without further rambling, I present the list of ten switched on people and profiles you should follow on Twitter:
Darren is one of the world’s foremost experts in writing for the web. You’d be pretty hard pressed to not have his name come up when looking for any advice on how to create, write for or find a world class blog. He runs ProBlogger – one of the most esteemed ‘writing for the web’ websites around.
His tweeting style is personable and very approachable – offering web marketing and social advice as well as day-to-day personal commentary. Highly recommended for businesses and individuals who write content for an audience.
My favorite tech blog on the web. Mashable tweet all sorts of nerdy goodness. They are often first online to break the big tech stories. If you love your tech news, gadgets and latest industry news from Silicon Valley then you need to be following mashable.
Suzi Dafnis is the Community director for the Australian Businesswomen’s Network and seems to be tweeting useful and insightful business advice 24 hours a day. A ‘must follow’ account for any Australian business looking for business mentoring advice, pod casts and cool and relevant links.
The editor of searchengineland.com – one of the worlds most popular search engine and online marketing websites. Nearly quarter of a million people follow Danny’s posts. He’s one of a handful of thought leaders in the online space. His thoughts, research and advice pretty much define what online marketers worldwide consider to be ‘best practice. If you consider your self a bit of an internet nerd (I’ll put my hand up here), then Danny needs to be in your follow list asap.
A contributing editor of Bloomberg, Paul is often the first to break the big financial stories. He’s mostly focused on US content but is very quick to the mark in providing insight and information on all the big financial stories worldwide. So if economics and staying on top of the big financial news happening worldwide is your thing, then you’ll love Paul’s tweets.
An elite online resource for all kinds of Australian business news, entrepreneur advice, market professional commentary and all things small to medium business. This is the Twitter account for the popular magazine of the same name. Updates are frequent and always contain great bits of advice for Australian businesses of all types. If you’re an Aussie business, then following Dynamic Business is a must!
The author of popular PR blog PR Warrior. A journalist by profession, Trevor frequently offers advice on Public Relations and the social web. He tweets often about marketing and publicity tactics and ideas. If trying to gain traction online is something you’re keen to know more about, then @trevoryoung is the perfect account for you to follow.
Heather is the ever-present and eternally helpful flag bearer of MYOB advice and tactics. A qualified Charted Accountant, Heather is the author of ‘Learn MYOB in 7 Days’. Her twitter account is always active often offering MYOB software advice and tips. If you’re a user of MYOB AccountRight, be sure to add Heather to your follow list.
Leanne has over 20 years experience in helping Australian business. She too is often first on the scene to assist MYOB/Twitter users with questions and insights into MYOB software. But not everything is MYOB of course; Leanne’s day-to-day personal tweets also offer a nice reprieve from the often-tedious business day. So if you’re an MYOB user, @Leanne_Berry is definitely a great one account to follow.
Yep, I’m talking about THE Steve Martin of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Jerk, and Three Amigos fame. The man is a genius and every tweet that he sends out is comedic gold. We all know work isn’t always a barrel of laughs, but following Steve in your Twitter feed can definitely provide and often needed reprieve from day-to-day seriousness.
Oh and of course, last but not least:
MYOB (@MYOBTeam)
This one’s pretty self-explanatory. The Twitter account of MYOB. We frequently tweet tips and tricks about MYOB software and services, latest information about MYOB happenings and releases and awesome business advice. We’re also up for a chat too, so don’t be shy to send us tweet now and then.
Simply put, I’d like to call the MYOB Twitter account the best Twitter account in existence – although I think the legal guys might have something to say about that. So let’s just say, if you’re not following it . . . why not?? IT’S AWESOME!
So there you have it. I have no doubt that following any of the above accounts you will learn something new and awesome almost on a daily basis.
Happy Tweeting.

Some great accounts there, and I’ll be sure to check out the others I’m not following yet.
Another informative account is the official twitter account of the Australian Tax Office – I think it is @ato_gov_au off the top of my head.

Hey Heather – yes, except I thought it was Friday?
I agree, I’d love to see a part two! Dynamic Business and Trevor Young are two Twitter accounts I will be following from the strength of this article alone.
And for those interested in Search Engine news, Daylan’s suggestion to follow Danny Sullivan is a good one!
