A makeover that matters

Forget The Block and The Renovators – I’m spending this Monday doing a makeover that matters.

The idea began a few weeks ago, when my business m.a.d.woman was lucky enough to win the 2011 Telstra Business Awards Yellow Pages Socially Responsible Business of the Year in Victoria. It was there that I met the winners of the Micro Business Award category, The Wall Sticker Company.

The Wall Sticker Company owners Fiona Gathercole and Jenny Menz and I really clicked and met up about a week later. We had much in common – including our values, flexibility and speed to market. Our logos even shared the same colours and similar fonts! Within an hour we decided to collaborate to create a new socially responsible brand, sticker m.a.d.

Within a couple of weeks, we’d already got our first range of sticker m.a.d. products – motivational, inspirational and fun removable wall stickers – to market. We’re putting 20 per cent of each sale into a fund to renovate spaces for people who could use something to smile about.

This week we’re doing our first makeover. It’s for a unit of 24 patients with acquired brain injuries at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. We’re bringing the outdoors inside – creating beautiful vistas on walls to engage residents who are not always able to leave the premises.

Not only are we getting to work together to make a positive impact, but we are able to get other businesses – large and small – involved.

This project has provided a great opportunity for one of my favourite suppliers, Shelli Whitehurst and her team from CodeNameMax, who recently created my fantastic new website, to do a socially responsible team building exercise.

Together, three businesses will be making a difference in a day. We can’t wait to do our next one. I’m looking forward to working with other businesses who are ready to get their teams doing makeovers that matter too.

Does your business contribute to the community? When has working collaboratively made a difference for you?

Ladies, what a fabulous job! Your m.a.d.Stickers look amazing! I’ve posted a link above to the post and all the pictures, for everyone to go and have a stickybeak of your hard work.’

You should also head to a post by our resident nice guy, Paul Hassing, who last week asked about business support of charities – there’s plenty of great causes being promoted over here – you should definitely promote m.a.d.Stickers and the great job you have done. :)

Oh Melina, that’s so wonderful. Not only did you give the Royal Melbourne Hospital a make over, you’ve given the lives of the people there a make over for the BEST. I just love what you do and represent. You’re a true inspiration. x
