Danger Will Robinson! I’m back from my break. Thank you for continuing to read and comment. The last three weeks did me good. I also learned hard-but-valuable lessons on how to make my next holiday (and maybe yours) a whole lot better. Final things Despite drawing a clear line in the sand a month before my break, I let three things slip into ‘my’ time: Preparing a business activity statement. Passing a project to another copywriter. Writing this post ahead of time so I wouldn’t have to do it at 6 am on my first day back. I should’ve made time to nail all these things before I left.

It’s only a model ... In gearing up for my holiday, I had to consider my clients. After last year’s vigorous debate, I realised throwing my hands in the air was no longer an option. This left me with three tactics, which I combined for a winning strategy. 1. Declare peace Next time you want an avalanche of business, tell your customers you’re going away (even if you aren’t). For others it’s a time to push the pedal down hard and race to the line.

Read MoreThe crunch on lunch
Are you too busy to eat lunch? Or maybe you’re the kind of person that likes to scroll through e-mails on your smart phone with some kind of snack in the other hand? The era of the long lunch could well be over as people now cram as much as possible into their day – but this might not be entirely healthy. Lunch is a great way to refuel, take a breath and recharge for the afternoon stretch, and by not allowing your mind to recover from the flurry of morning busyness you’ve just encountered, you could be making yourself less effective for the afternoon.

Read MoreHow stopping can keep you going
More more more! How much are you squeezing into every day? How much more do you think is possible? Never before have people pushed themselves as hard as they do now, and an unfortunate by-product of this is the dreaded ‘stupid mistake’. A stupid mistake is something basic and fundamental that you do when you are cramming too much into your life for too long.

Read MoreA little bit open for business…
What are you doing reading this post? Just checking email quickly between courses? Are you on your smart phone? Chances are, you are probably not alone. The few days between Christmas and New Year are an interesting time for those that have to - or decide to - work. Some industries never close, others use the time to catch up while others are on holiday and for others, the holidays are meaningless and just another day at the office.
