Over 4,100 Free Websites go live in first days of 'Getting Aussie Business Online' initiative

Google & MYOB Getting 8 Aussie Businesses Online Every Hour

Over 4,100 Aussie businesses have set up a website through ‘Getting Aussie Business Online’ over the last three weeks.

Getting Aussie Business Online is a nationwide initiative to help small businesses set up a free website with the essential information about their business - like opening hours, phone number, and a map - in about 15 minutes. Google and MYOB announced the initiative on 2 March and plan to help at least 50,000 businesses get online this year.

On average, 8 Australian business owners have set up their business website every hour since launch.

Tim Reed, CEO of MYOB said, “We’re thrilled that more than 4,100 small business owners have already set up their free website. It’s a clear sign that once you remove the barriers of cost, lack of knowledge and time for Aussie business owners, they are keen to get online and be part of the digital economy.”

Nadia, of Cakes by Nadia, is one of those business owners. With four kids and as an owner/ operator of her cake-making and design business in Illawong, NSW, Nadia has a lot on her plate.

“It’s imperative for a small business to have this sort of online presence,” Nadia said today. “Customers simply don’t think you’re legitimate without one and Getting Aussie Business Online has filled that need for me very easily and fast.”

“It’s very easy and I love that I can change, add and delete things daily to suit my needs.”

Nadia has created a photo gallery of her cakes on her website, and she has a list of events she’ll be attending, like the upcoming Sydney Bridal Fair. She has links to her Twitter and Facebook pages. And of course all the basics are there too - phone number, email, a map and opening hours.

Claire Hatton, Head of Local Business for Google Australia said, “There were nearly 15,000 searches for “cakes sydney” last month. To be among the results, Nadia needs to be online.”

Tim Reed added, “Millions of Australians regularly turn to the Internet to research local shops and services, so we’re thrilled to have helped Nadia get a website, so she can get online and be found. More than a million Aussie businesses don’t have a website, so we really hope as many as possible take Nadia’s lead and get a free website and get ahead.”

To set up a free website visit www.gettingbusinessonline.com.au. Business owners need to enter their ABN, a phone number, and a few details about their business such as street address, preferred contact method, and opening hours. The website is then available immediately. The average time taken to set up a website is about 15 minutes. Business owners can enhance their website with an image gallery, news section, links and a ‘subscribe for news’ function.

After the first year, businesses can choose to pay $5 per month on a pay-as-you-go basis to maintain their website. Websites can be cancelled at any time. The .com.au domain is free for the first two years, after which businesses can expect to pay about $30 a year to renew.
